Reuse, Reconsider & Reimagine: Week 1

This summer I’m taking Reuse, Reconsider & Reimagine: Collage, Drawing & Painting through Cooper Union. The class focuses on reusing previously abandoned paintings, drawings, and photographs to explore the interrelationship between collage, painting, and drawing while stressing the importance of intuition and experiment.

Mechanical Drawings, No. 1-4. (Drawing Machines reconfigured).

This series of experiments was a response to the use of irregular shapes and forms in Lee Krasner’s collage work. I tend to rely on structure and geometry in my own collage work and using inconsistent, irregular shapes for these studies quickly became fussy.

IKEA Hacks, No. 1-3.

This group of (quick!) studies was done after “Mechanical Drawings”. I continued to work in black and white using photographs from “Site Project” in fall of 2020 where I documented an IKEA utility cart with a macro lens. Working by hand, I leaned into my bias for structure and grid and focused on creating a sense of depth and place for a “hacked” piece of furniture.

Celica Portraits, No. 1 & 2

These studies were created digitally in InDesign. I’ve found that working digitally allows for different type of spontaneity. “Accidents” of placement and sizing often occur, revealing pairings I would not have thought of myself.
